Dynamic Equilibrium – Hong Kong Design Centre, 2022/23

The Hong Kong Design Centre (HKDC) is a non-profit that works with the government of Hong Kong to promote the use of design in business. It aims to position Hong Kong as a major Asian design hub.

HKDC’s 2022/23 annual report is powered by the portraiture of Kelvin Or and illustrations by Hong Kong design studio, The Cabinet.

Or’s portraits appear in the interview sections of the report and his subject matter is the personnel of HKDC. His pictures are a source of calm in a sometimes hectic report. The subjects of Or’s portraits are careful but casually placed, their immediate environment thoughtfully selected to complement the sitter. It effectively distances itself from the common, stiff portraits of corporate figures so often seen in annual reports.

The illustrations by The Cabinet—especially the isometric maps—are full of lively detail and reward repeat viewing. Depicted in a delicate line and a softly-toned colour palette, the illustrations provide support where needed, without being loud.

Another noteworthy section of the report are the pages on fashion. Taking inspiration from ’90s magazine design, these pages are brash and energetic, providing a counterpoint to the remainder of the report.  This annual report is one that pulls off a careful juggling act between movement and stillness; vibrance and calm.
